R&D PARTNER: UNIVERSITY OF PERUGIA, ITALY History and Importance to Field of R&D This laboratory in the University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy was founded in 1987 by Dr. Riccardo Calafiore and his coworkers, within the Department of Internal Medicine of the School of Medicine. The Laboratory pioneered, worldwide, studies with micro-encapsulation of pancreatic islets and other live cells, using natural chemical polymers, extracted from marine brown seaweeds (sodium alginate).

Throughout the past two decades of intense work, the Lab has developed original methods to ultra purify the raw alginate powder, available in the market, turning it on “clinical grade” alginate, suitable for human use, or adjusting shape and size of alginate-based microcapsules. The latest developments of this research are now focusing on microencapsulated neonatal pig Sertoli cells alone grafts. Encapsulated neonatal pig Sertoli cells grafts have been proven to reverse hyperglycemia in a unique animal model of spontaneous, autoimmune T1DM: the NOD mouse.
